Today I’m leaving Thunder Bay and headed out to Winnipeg (Manitoba) and Regina (Saskatchewan). From there it’s a straight shot West out to Calgary and onwards and upwards to Banff. From where I am now, it’s about 2100 kilometers.
It was a wonderful couple of days here in Thunder Bay and now it’s time to get on going. As much as I’m looking forward to getting out of the hills and onto the prairies (the hills getting here were vicious), from all the other accounts I’ve heard from other cyclists, the Prairies is where the riding really gets tough. Maybe not as tough physically, but definitely mentally.
Wide open land that expands in front of you to a horizon that never gets closer.
I’ve heard a couple of jokes about how flat and straight the roads are, the top two are these:
-You know you’re in the Saskatchewan when your dog runs away and you can still see him three days later, he just looks smaller.
-Ever heard of the photographer that went insane? Yeah, he tried to get a closeup of the horizon.
Today’s ride will take me from TB out to Raith, ON. It’s about 85 kilometers away, on the way to Winnipeg.

You’re doing great! That’s so cool that you made it this far on a bicycle. It certainly is motivating when one is ambivalent about exercising here at home and then remembering what you’re doing day after day in unfamiliar territory. Keep it up and you will come back stronger in so many ways.
